Aim:  To establish basic theoretical concepts
within quantum mechanics and statistical physcs.
Contents:  Quantum mechanics: Particles as waves,
Schrödinger's equation. Expectations values, operators, eigenvalues, and stationary states. Commutators, unitary transformations, and matrix representation. Symmetry and conservation laws. Free particles, the potential well, and the harmonic oscillator. Angular momenta, central potentials, and the hydrogen atom. Perturbation and the variational method. Identical spin ½ particles. Interaction of quantum systems with radiation.

Statistical physics: Thermodynamic equilibrium and state quantities. The thermodynamic potentials. Ensemble averages, Liuvilles theorem, the microcanonical, canonical, and macrocanonical ensembles. Density matrices,Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, and Fermi-Dirac statistics.
