Recommended semester:  7th - 9th semester
Scope and form:  Lectures and exercises
Evaluation:  Oral presentation and approval of reports
Examination:  13-scale
Previous course:  80223
Prerequisites:  42220 / 80201 Basic process technology and heat transfer
Preferred prerequisites:  42301 / 80001
No credit points with:  80223
Aim:  To enable the students to develop and use computer based methods in numerical simulation of thermal processing of materials.
Contents:  Lectures: Numerical methods for simulation of thermal processing of materials especially the control volume based finite difference method. Thermal resistance. Formulation in polar co-ordinates. Explicit and implicit algorithms. Stability analysis. Crank-Nicholson's method and the ADI method. Analytical solutions based on the error function. Riemann temperature. Heat transfer coefficients. Algorithms for the release of latent heat. Modelling of thermal and mechanical fields in welding.Thermal stresses and deformations in casting. Determination of material data. Inverse modelling.

Exercises: Development and programming of algorithms for simulation of thermal processing of materials, especially casting. The first part of the exercises which is compulsory, consists of modelling of solidification of a sand casted plate. The result are compared with measurement. During the second part the students choose a small modelling project within the field of thermal processing of materials.
