Aim:  To deepen the students' knowledge of modern instrumental chemical analytical methods and techniques, their background, possibilities and limitations, and their practical applications.
Contents:  The theoretical background for a number of instrumental analytical methods is given. The course covers electrochemical methods (e.g., coulometry, conductimetry, potentiometry, voltammetry, anodic- and potentiometric stripping) as well as optical methods (e.g., UV-VIS, atomic absorption- (AAS) and atomic emission spectrometry (AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), luminescence and turbidimetry), extraction and the principles of chromatography (liquid-, ion exchange- and ion chromatography). Electrochemical and optical titrations. Automation of instrumental analytical methods (batch and continuous flow).
Remarks:  26310 is the theoretical basis for the ensuing optional 3-weeks experimental course 26312, which comprises practical exercises with selected instrumental methods treated in 26310. Is also advantageous as prerequisite for the advanced special courses offered by the department.
