Aim:  To provide the student with thorough knowledge as well as practical skills in those parts of mathematics that are useful in chemical engineering. To introduce the student to various helpful tools from information technology. To provide the student with a conceptual understanding of mathematics and with some skills in mathematical reasoning.
Contents:  Elementary functions of one variable. Differential equations. Complex numbers. Linear Algebra, including solution of systems of equations, matrices, determinants, eigenvalue problems, diagonalization. Functions of several variables, first part: Differentiability and linearization. In the project subjects of changing content. Internet. Spreadsheet (Excel). Computer algebra system (Maple).
Remarks:  At the written exam approximately 30% of the problems should be solved without the use of books or calculators. The remaing problems can be solved with the aid of books and notes. No calculators or computers can be used.
The exam-project is handed in during the 3 week period. An oral examination is held at the end of that period.
