Aim: The students should acquire a basic understanding of biological processes - from cell to industry. The students will therefore gain knowledge about the cell structure, the biochemical and molecular biology processes together with the principal elements and control of biotechnological processes. With this backgroud the student should be able to discuss problems like eg. biodiversity, bioethanol, purification, waste disposal, bioinformatics, environment, food and medical biotechnology as well as perform simple calculations with regard to biological processes. |
Contents: Based on chosen themes - bioethanol, insulin, food, antibiotics, environment - the course covers theory and practicals with the disciplines of microbiology, biotechnology and biochemistry. The theory covers: - the cell as a factory: The structure and function of macromolecules. From gene to protein. Enzymes. Major metabolic pathways. Energy and redox metabolism. - Industrial bioprocesses: Biotechnological unit operations. Instrumentation. Media. Simple kinetics. - Applied aspects: Bioprocesses, medical biotechnology, food, plant biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, biodiversity, bioethics. |
Remarks: The course is recommended for students on "kemi- and miljøfagpakken". |
