Aim: To introduce a new, dynamic and multidisciplinary topic in modern microbiology: On the basis of molecular biology and applying its tools and approaches it is possible to etablish an integrated understanding of relationships between evolution, ecology and physiology in the microbial world. |
Contents: Traditionally microbiology has been divided into a number of separate areas which rarely showed any mutual interest. The most important of these are general microbiology (physiology, taxonomy, ecology), medical microbiology (characterization of pathogens), and molecular microbiology (genetics and regulatory (genetics and regulatory aspects). In recent years, these areas have been mixed up to a large extent due to the dispersal of the molecular techniques. This has resulted in a revolution of the investigationes of complex microbial systems (ecology and pathogenesis), and at the same time the molecular microbiology has received new inspirations. The course will cover these new developments in microbiology and focus on the significance in relation to applications in industry, the environmental sector, agriculture and the health sector. The newest literature is the core of the teaching material, and the students are expected to participate actively in the presentations. During the teaching period a number of visiting scientists will contribute to the presentations. |
