Aim:  To obtain a basic knowledge of microbial processes and microorganisms that are active during: Degradation of xenobiotics, degradation of wastewater and organic waste, production of bioenergy, microbial mining and mineral recovery, biological control of pests and as pathogens, and a presentation of the underlying biotechnologies
A short introduction is given to microbial evolution and metabolism and regulation of microbial processes.
Contents:  Biocomplexity, methods for characterization of microorganisms and their activity in complex biological systems, adaptation and sucession of microbial populations in complex systems, microbial growth in suspended culture and in biofilm, microbial metabolism of xenobiotic compounds, utilization of microorganisms for purification of soil, water and air, microbial production of greenhouse gases, microbial evolution.Presentation and discussion of relevant biotechnological processes
The lab excercises deal with microbial production of energy, microbial mining, wastewater treatment, molecular microbial diversity, identification of microorganisms from complex environments.
Remarks:  The course has been expanded from 7,5 to 10 points to also deal with environmental biotechnology and anaerobic biotechnology.
