No credit points with:  24771 / 24772 / 24773 / 24101 / 24001
Aim:  To give the students a basic knowledge of microorganisms and their molecular biology. To give the students sufficient knowledge of the methods and results in microbiology that they are able to follow scientific discussions and read publication in microbiology on their own. In the experimental part the basic principles for handling biological materials (cells and macromolecules) is taught, Because the focus is on environmental and industrial angles, the aim of the course is to support and illustrate the topics presented in the theoretical part.
Contents:  An introduction to cell biology is given including macromolecular processes such as DNA replication, transcription and translation. The terminology and taxonomic principles of microbiology, overview of groups of microorganisms, detection of microorganisms with modern, molecular biological methods, sterilization and disinfecting, cell division and life cycles of procaryotes, eucaryotes and their vira, growth physiology of microorganisms, bacterial genetics, and selection of mutants are presented. In the experimental part microbiological techniques like sterile technique, cell growth, wastewater analysis and bacteria in food are demonstrated. Regarding DNA technology, the following topics are covered: genetic engineering, isolation and analysis of DNA, and regulation of gene expression.
Remarks:  The theoretical part is 7,5 points and the experimental part 2,5 points.
