27801 Bioreaction engineering
Danish title: Bioreaktionsteknik
Language:  Danish    ECTS-creditpoints:  4,8
Type:  course at phd level
Program:  Chemical Engineering
Class schedule:
1 week in june 2003, 2005
Scope and form:  Lectures with exercise sections
Aim:  The reactors used in the bio-industries are designed according to the same general concepts as reactors elsewhere in the Chemical Industry. There are , however, many quite specific characteristica of bio-reactians, e.g. the complex stoichiometric networks of metabolism. Using a quantitatively based approach fermentation processes are analyses with respect to control and optimization of the operation. Biochemitry, microbiology and chemical engineering are alle used to obtain a deeper insight into the complex wold og bioreactions.
Contents:  Stoichiometry of cellular reactions, degree of reduction blances. Yield coefficients and the black box models. ATP balances and energetics, including heat balances. Metabolic flux analysis og metabolic networks. Reaktion kinetics - unstructured and structured, population balances and morphlogically structured models. Multicomponent cultures. Bioreactors in steady state and in transient operation. Ideal reactors (batch, continuous and fed-batch). Industrial bioreactors (mass transfer and mixing)
