Aim:  The aim of the course is to broaden the knowledge of unicellular organisms structure, morphology and physiology in addition to the work with biological materials and systems. To give a knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices(GXP) for microbiological and biochemical work. To obtain general skills of biomethodology.
Contents:  Biochemical part : metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids. Enzymes kinetics. Microbiological part : Techniques of culturing, analytical use of microorganisms, fermentation kinetics and -techniques (batch and chemostat). Sterilization. Biomethodology : GLP / GXP for biological laboratories. Separation techniques for biological molecules. Chromatograhic and electrophoretic techniques. Enzymatic and immunological techniques. Methods of detection for different groups of molecules. Litterature critics.
The practical part of the course contains : Microbiology : Qualitative and quantitative detection of microorganisms. Microbiological assays. Fermentations. Biochemistry : Enzymatic analysis (end-point and kinetics). Purification of enzymes, e.g. by precipitation, chromatography and electrophoresis. Characterization of enzymes. Immunology.
The project concerns a description and critisism of a biochemical or microbiological analysis method, based on a scientific article.
Remarks:  This course is part of a group of semi-compulsory courses consisting of 27941 and 27961.
