27942 Introduction to Biotechniques

Scope and form:  Classroom lectures, colloquies and group work. Laboratory exercises. Project continuing in the 3-week period.

Aim:  On basis of scientific litterature to design and follow a standard operational procedure (SOP) for a microbial or biochemical method. To give knowledge of basic biotechnical methodologies and their relation to bio-processes. To give knowledge of principles for Good Laboratory Practices (GXP).
Contents:  Microbial physiology and metabolism. Enzyme kinetics and inhibition. Fermentation kinetics and -techniques. Separation techniques for biological molecules. Chromatograhic and electrophoretic techniques. Enzymatic and immunological techniques. Microbial and enzymatic assay. Method validation and GXP.
In the last part of the course the students work in groups on basis of scientific litterature with a project. The project continues in the tree-week period with writing of the report and oral presentation.
Remarks:  This course is part of the semicompulsory group of courses consisting of 27931 and 27961.
The course is offered for the first time in the spring 2002.
