Aim:  That the students obtain knowledge of the municipal, regional and national transition processes towards a sustainable urban development, including spatial planning on municipal, regional , national and international (EU) level, with a special emphasis on the urban regions, the urban environment and the sustainable city. The participants have to be able to explain what the most important problems are, the technical concepts and the means of spatial and infrastructure planning, including the conflicts of interest in planning and the relation between planning and the processes that drive development and transition in towns and urban regions
Contents:  The starting point of the course is actual problems in the area of spatial and infrastructure planning in the Greater Copenhagen region. Special attention is given to the interrelationship between land use, technical infrastructure, transport, energy and environment. The planning tools are described with emphasis on the municipal and regional level. The importance of public participation is assessed from different theoretical points of view. Conflicts of interest between different geografical levels of planning and the different sectors are described. The students work with stakeholder analysis related to chosen relevant problems. Different interpretations of the sustainable city and urban environment are discussed, and a number of examples of planning strategies for European cities are described.
