Aim: Conduct a survey in Greenland of a relevant issue applying geotechnical, geophysical or engineering geological survey methods suitable for arctic areas. Relevant issues may include surveys within the fields of water supply, energy (sun water wind oil / coal), house and road construction on permafrost, environmental surveys, mapping and assessment of raw material resources. The student's own proposals for project assignments are welcomed. |
Contents: Method. Work is conducted in groups of 3 to 5 people. Weekly supportive lectures are provided on survey methods to be applied during the fieldwork part of the project. The group plans the fieldwork during the spring, making themselves comfortable with and testing measuring instruments, etc. through minor survey tasks in Denmark, procuring maps and other material describing the project area and acquiring relevant in-depth information, published or un-published. Fieldwork is conducted in Greenland during approximately 3 weeks at the end of July to the middle of August - primarily based in Sisimiut, West Greenland. Collected data and samples are analysed at laboratories and data banks in Sisimiut as well as at DTU upon the group's return to Denmark. The project work is completed by a report to be handed in and defended verbally during the examination period after the autumn term. |
Remarks: The course is conducted during the spring term, in July/August and during the autumn term. The course rates as an engineering-technological mid-term project (PMP). This course is provided by Arctic Technology Centre, which in terms of administration and organisation is placed under BYG.DTU. This course is conducted in Danish and English. |
