Aim:  In Denmark a theory of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures has been under development for decades. The theory is based on the theory of perfectly plastic materials. This theory is to a large extent used in practical design in Denmark and other countries. The theory is in many respects superiour to the hitherto applied empirical design rules. On the basis of a few assumptions a general thory for any structural element may be developed. The theory now covers bending, shear, torsion and combined actions in beams, disks, slabs and shells. In the course the students get the possiblility to make themselves familiar with the theory, its assumptions and its limitations and practice the application of the theory for important structural elements and types of structures.
Contents:  Short introduction to the theory of plasticity. Failure conditions for concrete. Yield conditions for disks, slabs and shells. Reinforcement design. Disks and deep beams. Beams with holes. Shear (diagonal compression field theory). Torsion in beams. Combined actions in beams. Slabs (yield line theory and strip method). Shell theory with main emphasis on the stringer method. Punching shear in slabs and shells. Strength of joints.
