Aim:  To give the students the basic knowledge to design and analyse elements and joints in simple steel structures.
Contents:  Applicability of steel structures. Structural steel grades. Joining methods: Riveting, bolting, welding. Residual stresses from welding. Design and analysis of: Members subjected to tension and compression, trusses, plate and box girders, simple bearings. Stability phenomena: Column and plate buckling, lateral-torsional instability. Simple joints: Splices, nodes, frame corners, brackets and footings.
Remarks:  This course constitutes together with Concrete Structures (Theory and Design) and Timber Structures the basis within Structural Design.
