Aim:  Inertial forces from motion of structures can influence the motion as well as the force distribution in the structure. Dynamic effects typically occur in connection with natural loads like wind waves and earthquakes, and in traffic loads and collisions. The aim of the course is to give an understanding of dynamic effects in structures, to develop the theory of dynamic analysis of structures with one or more degrees of freedom, and to introduce numerical methods for dynamic analysis of structures.
Contents:  A simple system with one degree of freedom is used to study free or forced oscillations and to introduce the concept of damping. The results are generalized to structures with more degrees of freedom, and modal representation is described. The frequecy content of the load history, the distribution of the load and the structure and modeling of damping are presented. Dynamics of continuous structural elements like cables, beams and plates is discussed, and current methods for their numerical treatment are presented. The course contains numerically oriented exercises, to be handed in and presented in connection with an oral exam.
