Contents:  Optical fibres: structure, conditions of propagation, attenuation and pulse dispersion. Optical amplifiers: Construction, amplification and noise. Light sources and transmitters: Construction, modulation bandwidth and spectral properties. Photodiodes and receivers: Construction, electrical bandwidth, noise and sensitivity. Optical communication systems with digital modulation formats: Construction and system budgets. Multichannel systems. Laboratory exercises with optical fibers, optical amplifiers and systems experiments. Computer simulations of optical transmission.
Remarks:  Students with course 31489 Microwave Engineering can take the course. The course gives a basis for advanced courses in optical communication.
