Aim:  To give the student a knowledge of the structure and use of existing and future communication systems. The course gives a general introduction to communication systems, and is a foundation for more advanced courses. Examples of advanced courses are 34351 Network access, 34350 Broadband networks, 34340 Teletraffic engineering and network planning and 34341 Advanced data communication.
Contents:  Description of existing telecommunication networks, incl. elements such as access-networks (e.g. N-ISDN) and transport networks (SDH). Different types of data networks: LANs (local area networks), MANs, WANs (esp. the Internet). New communication systems such as wireless networks (ex. mobile telecommunication (GSM)) or wired networks (ex. xDSL). Operation and surveillance of communication systems (Network Management). Intelligent Networks (IN). Future broadband technologies and networks (ex. GPRS, ATM and B-ISDN). Protocols and protocol-elements (ex. flow-control) in communication networks.
