Aim: This course will teach the elements of programming multimedia tools and productions. This will include an overview of the tools available for multimedia authoring and criteria for choosing the right tool for various types of productions. The lectures will cover the concepts behind multimedia authoring tools and multimedia programming frameworks. The projects will require a fair amount of programming. |
Contents: The course will first take a look at existing authoring programs such as Macromedia's Flash and Director in order to become familiar with the elements of multimedia productions and general purpose authoring tools. We will then take a deeper look at a complete Java programming framework for multimedia, using QuickTime for Java. This is a cross-platform (MS Win95 / NT and Macintosh) development environment for integrating and manipulating many types of media. This will also give useful programming experience in the MPEG-4 file format, since it is closely based on the QuickTime file format. There will also be emphasis on both good software engineering practice and interdisciplinary cooperation required for multimedia productions. |
