Aim:  The course covers service development, service architectures and specific examples of new multimedia and communication services. The aim is to give students a general overview of how to develop relevant and user-friendly services for the most common networks and terminals, with a special focus on the new opportunities that are created in terms of increasing bandwidth and mobility and increasing use of multimedia content and interactivity. The project part consists of practical work with development and testing of services, preferably in co-operation with relevant companies.
Contents:  Lectures will go through the most common infrastructures and terminals for provision of services: The Internet, digital TV, mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) etc. Wireless technologies and Jini. Information gateways. Quality of service requirements. Service architectures: the interplay between content providers, service providers, network providers and end users. Development tools and platforms. Production and processing of digital content. User interfaces, user needs, usage scenarios and interactivity. Financing of services: Subscriptions, payment, transactions, advertising and commercials.
