Aim:  The field of hypermedia covers systems and methods for building complex information structures, which can facilitate information retrieval, navigation, collaborative work, etc. The basic idea is to organize the information in a network of nodes and links to form a logical and searchable structure, e.g. as it is known from the World Wide Web. Links may represent many different types of relationships (associations, actions, etc.) between nodes and parts of their content. The course gives an introduction to the basic concepts, the history and state-of-the-art of hypermedia. Students will learn how to design and develop simple hypermedia applications and how to evaluate hypermedia applications with a specified functionality.
Contents:  The course gives an introduction to several concepts: nodes, links, anchors, compositional structures, browsing and navigation, and synchronisation of time-based data (sound and video). Furthermore, topics like information retrieval and filtering, support for collaboration and shared whiteboards will be discussed. Early examples of pioneering multimedia and hypermedia systems (e.g. Augment, Xanadu, Intermedia, NoteCards, KMS) are presented. More recent systems such as hypermedia on the Internet (WWW, VRML), distributed hypermedia and open hypermedia (e.g. DEVISE Hypermedia, MicroCosm, SEPIA) will also be described. Students will get hands-on experience with a number of these systems. Various principles for implementation of hypermedia and specific areas of applications are discussed e.g. the use of hypermedia in product development, medical applications and software development.
