Aim:  The course aims at providing a quantitative understanding of the geochemical composition of groundwater with particular emphasis on water-mineral interactions with implications for groundwater quality and the effect of non-point pollution.
Contents:  A combination of lectures, manual calculations and computer modeling is used during the course. Chemistry and transport modeling using the code PHREEQC is an integral part of the course. The following subjects are covered in the lectures and excersizes: From rainwater to groundwater. Physical chemistry in aquifers: example fluoride, calculations of speciation and saturation, solid solution and reaction kinetics. Carbonate aquifers: CO2-production. Dissolution of carbonate minerals, dissolution kinetics of carbonates, sub-recent carbonate aquifers. Ion exchange processes: The fresh seawater interface, transport of pollutants, specific adsorption of heavy metals. Silicate Weathering: weathering processes and clay formation, mass balance calculations, dissolution kinetics of silicate minerals, acidification of groundwater. Redox processes: Redox diagrams, redox zonation in aquifers, iron in groundwater, reduction of nitrate, oxidation of pyrite. Solute transport: combining geochemical processes with water transport, dispersion and diffusion. Through the whole course emphasis is placed on understanding geochemical processes in a transport system. Alongside the subjects covered in class, the students will work out reports on their own on thematic problems such as: Arsenic in groundwater, fluorid hazards in groundwater etc.
