Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  10
Class schedule:   E1
Exam schedule:   No exam
Recommended semester:  4th -7th semester
Scope and form:  Combined lectures and practical + laboratory exercises, literature research and presentation of report
Evaluation:  Approval of exercises and reports
Evaluation of exercises and reports
Examination:  13-scale
Previous course:  56203 + 56222
Aim:  To provide students with (geological) understanding of and the methods for analyses of properties, geometry and distribution of sediments-soils for environmental and reservoir geological-engineering applications. The occurrence, composition and geology of raw materials - mineral resources, and geological hazards will also be treated. Moreover, the underlying geological processes within the deep to shallow earth will be discussed as relevant for engineers.
Contents:  Built up of the earth and plate tectonic processes;
Geological processes at the earth surface;
Natural geological disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, river flooding etc.);
Depositional sedimentary processes and analysis of sedimentary basins; Construction and interpretation of geological maps, cross sections, and tectonic deformation structures;
Spatial distribution, geometry, and properties of sediments, reservoirs and aquifers;
Diagenesis;
Laboratory methods for analysing sediments and soils;
Occurrence, exploitation and industrial use of mineral resources and raw material and associated environmental problems;
Methods for localising mineral resources
