10504 Low Temperature Physics
Danish title: Lavtemperatur fysik
Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  5
Type:  course at phd level, open university
Program:  Physics
Class schedule:   F4-A
E4-A
Exam schedule:   E4-A (dec 18 2001), F4-A (jun 04 2002)
Scope and form:  Lectures and seminars
Evaluation:  Approval of exercises and reports
Examination:  Pass/fail
Aim:  To obtain a thorough understanding of basic cooling to cryogenic temperatures and of cryogenic electronic devices based on quantum mechanical tunneling.
Contents:  The students first learn how to cool to cryogenic temperatures, emphasis is put on the properties of the two quantum fluids 3He and 4He and mixtures hereof. Dilution refrigerators (10 mK). Also modern miniature cooling machines (Stirling and other processes) are considered (10K). Next is superconductivity in low- and high-Tc materials. Josephson effect, tunneling of quasi particles and Cooper pairs. Short and long tunnel junctions. SQUID. Dynamics of single flux quanta in junctions and arrays. Flux-Flow Oscillators. SIS mixers. RSFQ (Rapid Single Flux Quantum) electronics.
Power-switching time considerations and large scale integration of perconducting electronics. Hybridization of superconductor and semiconductor electronics. Finnaly, we turn to tunneling in nanostructures. Fabrication (MBE, electron beam writing, STM etching). Single Electron Tunneling (SET) and single Cooper Pair Tunneling (CPT). Co-tunneling in SET transistor, Turnstile and pump. Noise in SET and CPT transistors. Parity effects. SET and CPT electronics. Metrological current standard.
