02200 Digital design and computer organization
Danish title: Digital design og datamaskinarkitektur
Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  10, External examination.
Type:  , open university
Class schedule:   E2
Exam schedule:   F2-B (maj 30 2002), E2-B (dec 13 2001)
Evaluation:  Written exam and approval of reports
Examination:  13-scale
Prerequisites:  02130
Aim:  To enable participants to design large scale digital systems and toprovide the participants with in depth knowledge on computerorganization.
Contents:  Part A - Design of digital systems. Data-path and Control.Pipelining. From algorithm to circuit. Performance measures (Throughputand Latency). Introduction to the hardware description language VHDLand a structured design flow (specification, stepwise refinement, simulation and synthesis). Part B - Computer organization: Introductionto computer organization and instruction sets. Numberrepresentation and arithmetic for integer and floating-point numbers.Organization of the processor in a modern RISC-computer (control unit, data path, pipelining). The relationship between processor organizationand instruction set. Buses and I / O units. Memory hierarchies, cachememories and memory management. Part C - Design project: In parallelwith the lectures participants design and simulate a simple processorusing VHDL and related CAD-tools. The purpose of this is twofold: toelaborate on the material covered in the lectures, and to introduce theuse of VHDL and related CAD tools for the design of digital circuits andsystems.
