Aim: The main purpose of the course is give the students a generel view of the essential outlines and periods of the history of technology from 1700 until the outbreak of the Second World War. The course also aims at creating an understanding for the interaction between technology, economy, culture and society as a whole. It is also one of our goals to link the written sources with the many leftovers such as patents, technical drawings and artefacts such as tolls, machines and industrial plants. During the course there will be an opportunity to discuss philosophy of science of the profession as well as the existential considerations provoked by different choices of technology. |
Contents: Through the presentation of a series of significant processes of evolution with the relevant national and international literature as our starting point it is the intention to give a broad introduction to the history of technology as well as to present different professional approaches to the subject. It is one goals to enable the students to investigate and to examine critically the relations between the environment, various resources and economy and to be able to apply their knowledge in relation to contemporary technological solutions. The content of the course range from energy, infrastructure, resources, transfer of knowledge and technology to urban planning, the environment and technological innovation processes. Furthermore the historical development of the profession of the engineer will be discussed. |
