42372 Life-Cycle Assessment of Products and Systems

Aim:  The students should: 1) acquire a basic understanding of the life cycle concept, 2) acquire both theoretical and practical understanding of parameters within external environment, work environment, resource consumption and social aspects as key elements in an assessment of the life cycle of products or systems, 3) become familiar with the application of LCA as an environmental management tool in companies and public administration, 4) be able to plan, carry out and evaluate a life cycle assessment.
Contents:  Introduction to the life cycle concept. Applications of LCA for assessment- and development purposes in private and public companies and public administration. Purpose of using LCA in industrial production, incl. building industry, energy production etc. Description of LCA tools / methods and operationalization of individual parameters with relations to external environment, work environment, consumption of resources (energy, minerals etc.), and social aspects. Examples of different applications of LCA in various industrial sectors. Including buildings, food, energy, industrial products, chemicals and materials. Presentation of various support tools for LCA. Case study project in groups. The topics are specific products from areas that lie within the focus areas of the engineering education given at DTU. Presentation of case study project report.
Remarks:  Please note that in case of overbooking students that do not show up at the first lecture or in advance notify their interest in participating will be excluded.
