42405 Introduction to Production and Operations Management

3 hour written examination one afternoon in week 47 or 48 (the date is announced in the beginning of September).

Scope and form:  Lectures, discussions, exercises and group work
Evaluation:  Written exam and approval of reports
Short reports from groupwork are evaluated and count with 1/3 weight.
Examination:  13-scale

Aim:  Offer a comprehensive overview of Production and Operations Management to enable the students to:
- understand Production and Operations Management taks related to product development and design and production planning and production.
- use general principles and selected models and methods to work on Production and Operations Management problems.
Contents:  The role, importance and development of Production and Operations Management. The following four main areas are covered:

- Strategy of productive systems.

- Designing productive systems (product and service design, quality management, process planning and layout, supply chain).

- Operating productive systems (capacity planning, material planning, process control, project management).

- General subjects (influence of the IT-development, ERP-systems / Enterprise Resource Planning, Business Excellence, continual improvements, environmental management, marketing).
Remarks:  English-speaking guest students may register for the course and the examination (the textbook is in english) after agreement with the contact person responsible for the course.

The course is both an introduction to Production and Operations Management and a basic prerequisite for the more advanced courses: 42450, 42455, 42460, 42371, 42465.
