Previous course:  91732 / 91742
Prerequisites:  28021 (senest parallel med)
Aim:  To provide knowledge of the most important materials of construction among metals, cerams, polymers, and composites.
To give an understanding of mechanical and chemical properties of materials of construction in dependence of structure (atomic, micro, and macro), chemical composition and treatment during fabrication. To provide knowledge of some commonly used methods of testing. To form a basis for selection of materials. To give an orientation about principles for development of materials with specific properties
Contents:  Theory: Properties of materials and testing methods. Structure of crystalline materials. Equilibrium Phase diagrams, phase transformation, and microstructure. Diffusion. Strain hardening, recrystallisation, and grain growth. Heat treatment of steel. Precipitation hardening. Fracture. Corrosion. Carbon- and low alloy steel, cast iron, and other selected alloys. Glass, clay based ceramics, concrete, and advanced technical ceramics. Plastics, rubber, paint, and adhesives. Exercices: Fabrication of plastic items (injection moulding of thermoplastic, fiber reinforcement of thermosetting, foam). Bend-, tensile-, compression-, and impact testing of plastics.Fabrication of metallographic section and use of the metallographic microscope. Recrystallisation. Hardening of steel. Tensile and hardness testing of metals. Investigation of corrosion. Materials selection.
Remarks:  The Course is mandatory for Diplom-Kemi
The classroom lectures are followed by a written examination.
The course is run for the first time in spring semester 2002.
