Aim:  To introduce the principles of physical chemistry in order to enable the student to solve simple chemical problems.
Contents:  Phase equilibria for pure substances and for mixtures. Basic chemical thermodynamics, especially enthalpy and Gibbs energy. Chemical equilibrium calculations especially for solubility, complex formation, acids and bases. Electrochemical cells, electromotive force and the Nernst equation. Batteries, fuel cells and electrochemical corrosion. Rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions, energy of activation and catalysts. Electronic structure of atoms and molecules. The periodic table. Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding. Intermolecular forces. Molecular geometry. Structure and properties of crystals.
Remarks:  This course covers the chemistry part of core science elements.
