Aim:  To provide a basic knowledge of the structures of crystalline materials, necessary to describe and classify crystalline materials by common analytical methods (esp. X-ray powder diffraction) and to understand the general relations between structures of crystalline compounds and their chemical and physical properties.
Contents:  Symmetry in crystal structures, esp. symmetry operations, crystal classes and space groups. Structure types. Defect chemistry. Chemical, electrical, magnetic, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties of crystalline compounds. X-ray crystallography, esp. powder diffraction. Experimental work includes preparation and studies of structure and properties of crystalline material. Use of crystallographic databases.
