Aim: To give the participants an insight into the chemical reactivity of functional groups and their spectroscopic properties (mostly IR,occasionally NMR) and to give them experience in the identification of organic chemical compounds, using qualitative and quantitative experiments supported by spectroscopic investigations (mostly IR, occasionally NMR). |
Contents: Organic chemical compounds are analysed for purity by physical methods, incl. chromatography. Purification may be carried out. Functional groups are identified, partly by the use of chemical tests, partly by an assessment of spectroscopic data (mostly IR, occasionally NMR). Quantitative analyses are performed. Derivatives are made of the compounds and any associated degradation products. Proposed structures are verified by comparing observed properties with those given in chemical literature. |
