26472 Organic Synthesis, laboratory course
Danish title: Organisk syntese, laboratoriekursus
Language:  Danish    ECTS-creditpoints:  5
Type:  open university
Class schedule:   E2
F2
Exam schedule:   No exam
Recommended semester:  3rd semester
Scope and form:  Laboratory course
Evaluation:  Approval of coursework/reports
Nine syntheses and the corresponding report sheets must be approved
Examination:  Pass/fail
Previous course:  91323
Compulsory:  26372
Prerequisites:  26370, 26470
Aim:  The aim of the course is an introduction to the practical aspects of organic synthesis, thereby illuminating several of the theoretical subjects dealt with in 26470.
Contents:  After a number of introductory exercises, each student performs 9 small-scale syntheses. Generally the nine selected types of reaction are: 1) Bromination, 2) Alkyl halide formation, 3) Esterification, 4) Hydrolysis of an ester or amide, 5) Nitration, 6) Reduction, 7) Oxidation, 8) Diazotization, 9) Friedel-Crafts reaction, 10) Grignard reaction.
The experiments are based on standard laboratory techniques. Each exercise involves stoichiometric computations, consultation of the authorized register of hazardous chemicals ("Risk-statements"), as well as a simple examination in the theoretical aspects of the exercise. Products are analysed by standard methods. In addition selected samples are analysed by TLC, GC, IR- and NMR-spectroscopy.
In order to fulfill the requirements of the course, written reports on all exercises must be approved.
