Aim: The aim is to give the students a fundamental knowledge of nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts through lectures on model catalysts and realistic multicomponent catalysts. An understanding of how the catalytic material is chosen and produced should be obtained through both theory and practical exercises. Furthermore, the student should be able to characterize the structure of the material on the nanometer scale, and to test the catalytic activity of the material |
Contents: Lectures, discussions in groups, and laboratory exercises will combine to cover a broad range of subjects, e.g. the catalytic effect, reaction kinetics, preparation methods, and structure and reactivity of model catalysts (single crystal metal surfaces, metaloxides) and industrial catalysts (porous support materials, zeolites, flame-synthesis in the gas phase). Furthermore, a number of experimental methods which are essential for characterizing nanostructured materials will be included, e.g. measurement of the surface area, characterization by microscopy (scanning tunneling microscopy, transmission electron microscopy) and x-ray and electron spectroscopies. It is our focus in this course that the students try as much of the equipment as possible, and this work will to some extent be a part of the research performed at ICAT. It is our aim that the same catalystic system is used for the different exercises, so that all the results combine to give a detailed understanding of the catalytic material. The course ends with an individual project where the students must search the relevant literature for a given sample, synthese, and characterize this using a couple of the experimental techniques practiced in the course. |

The course is given as a collaboration between the Chemistry Institute (KI), the Institute for Chemical Engineering (KT), and the Institute for Physics (FYS). |
