26909 Quality Assurance in Chemical Measurements
Danish title: Kvalitetssikring af kemiske målinger
Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  5
Type:  course at phd level, open university
Program:  Chemical Engineering
Class schedule:   Efterår og efter aftale med læreren
The course will run one afternoon (13.30-16.30) each week during the 14 week period.
Scope and form:  Lectures and exercises, based on lecture notes, original literature, and specific problem solution. Student colloquia
Evaluation:  Oral presentation and approval of coursework
Examination:  Pass/fail
Aim:  The aim is to prepare participants for present and future requirements to quality assurance of chemical measurements by familiarising them with the underlying scientific principles and their practical applicability. At the end of the course the participant will be able to establish and verify an uncertainty budget for a fully documented measurement procedure, as well as to demonstrate traceability to internationally accepted standards. The course will give the prerequisites for courses in accreditation.
Contents:  Contemporary versus traditional philosophy. Interpretation of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM). Identification of uncertainty components by the Analysis of Precision. EURACHEM examples of uncertainty budgets. Replacement of systematic and random errors by Type A and Type B uncertainty components. Verification of statistical control by the T-test. Calibration, validation, and traceability. Certification analysis and the Synthesis of Precision. Quality assurance (QA) of scientific publications.Emphasis is placed on the practical applicability of statistical control and full comparability of results obtained in realistic chemical assays, drawing on the participants own research projects.
