28011 Introduction to Chemical Process Engineering

Aim:  Through the analysis of a particular chemical production to give the students an introduction to the nature, structure and methods of the chemical engineering profession. To teach the students the fundamentals of material and energy balances, such as to enable them to demonstrate this knowledge on some industrial chemical problems. To present basic methods for water purification, such as to enable the students to suggest treatments for the production of drinking water or boiler feed water or for treatment of waste- water. Furthermore to apply stoichiometry to water purification processes. To give a survey of the environmental laws and regulations in the field of water treatment.
Contents:  Introduction to the chemical process industries. Flowsheets for setting up material and energy balances. Principles of stoichiometric calculations for continuous and batchwise processes and operations. Systems with recycle. Introduction to chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics. Elementary energy balances. Water analysis and characterization. Production of drinking water, boiler feed water and cooling water. Water pollution. Wastewater treatment.
Remarks:  The evaluation of the course is based on written reports and written examination.
