28212 Polymer Chemistry
Danish title: Polymerkemi
Language:  Danish    ECTS-creditpoints:  5, External examination.
Type:  , open university
Class schedule:   F4-A
Exam schedule:   F4-A (jun 04 2002), E4-A (dec 18 2001)
Recommended semester:  4th -7th semester
Scope and form:  Lectures, problem solving, group work and visits to companies.
Evaluation:  Written exam
Examination:  13-scale
Previous course:  36271
Prerequisites:  (23220), 26410 Organic Chemistry 2
Aim:  The participants are provided with knowledge of the synthesis of polymers including mechanisms, kinetics, identification, modification of polymers by chemical reactions, and degradation of polymers aiming at preservation, recycling or removal of polymers.
Contents:  Polymer reactions, including step-reactions, free radical and ion initiated chain reactions, are thoroughly deduced. Special emphasis will be given to the understanding of reaction parameters important in the control of rate of polymerization, molecular weight distributions, and the structural composition like branching, cross-links and stereo-chemical aspects. The reaction mechanisms associated with the different polymerization reactions will be profoundly treated. Polymer identification will be performed among other things by laboratory exercises in collaborating groups.
