41122 Fluvival and Marine Sediment Transport
Danish title: Sedimenttransport i vandløb og langs kyster
Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  7,5, External examination.
Type:  , open university
Program:  Civil Engineering, Environment & Planning
Class schedule:   F3-A
Exam schedule:   F3-A (maj 31 2002), Arrange with teacher
The reports on the problems must be handed in well in advance of the examination. Information on the deadline will be given during the course.
Recommended semester:  7th - 9th semester
Scope and form:  Lectures, problem sesions, preparation of report
Evaluation:  Oral exam and approval of reports
Examination:  13-scale
Previous course:  12532
Prerequisites:  57105 / 12520
No credit points with:  57357
Aim:  To enable the students to assess erosion and sedimentation problems in relation to engineering projects in rivers and along coasts
Contents:  Basic concepts: critical bed shear stress, bed load transport and suspended load transport in current and in waves. Bed forms (dunes and sand waves) and their significance for the flow resistance and sediment transport. Large scale morphology in rivers (meandering and braiding). Long- and cross-shore wave-induced currents. Sediment transport along coasts. Coastal morphology (bars, rip channels, coastline development). Transport of fine cohesive sediments. Design and construction of structures in rivers and coastal areas. Dredging, navigation channels, environmental aspects of dredging operations. Design and choice of structures: rubble mound breakwaters, monolithic structures, coastal protection, dikes. Scour protection in harbours and around structures. Quays and piers. River regulation.
