41212 Risk and Decision Analysis
Danish title: Risikoanalyse og beslutningsteori
Language:  English    ECTS-creditpoints:  5, External examination.
Type:  , open university
Class schedule:   F4-A
Exam schedule:   F4-A (jun 04 2002), E4-A (dec 18 2001)
Recommended semester:  4th -7th semester
Scope and form:  Lectures,exercises, project work (in cooperation with industry).
Evaluation:  Oral presentation and approval of reports
Oral presention of project work and evaluation of reports
Examination:  13-scale
Previous course:  76510
Prerequisites:  01020 / 01021
Preferred prerequisites:  Structural reliability analysis
No credit points with:  76510
Participant limitation:  Min. 5 Max. 30
Aim:  To provide the students with the necessary theoretical background to analyse and use scientific and systematic methods to perform a risk analysis and for making decisions under uncertainty.

To give the participants the ability
- to understand the fundamental aspects and pitfalls in the risk analysis;
- to perform an critically evaluate performed risk analysis;
- to use decision theoretic methods in decision making under uncertainty;
- to use decision theoretic methods in intelligent information systems.
Contents:  The fundamental aspects of the risk analysis are presented. Systematic methods for hazard identification in relation to a given activity are presented; among others both HAZOP and What-If analysis are introduced and taught through group-based exercises. The theory of Bayesian networks, fault trees and event trees is given.

The decision theoretic part of the course involves an introduction to the background of the decision theory and to the use of influence diagrams.

Scientific papers are included in the course and project work.

Student projects are performed primarily in connection with industry or maritime research institutions.
