Aim:  To enable the student to design refrigeration systems for food storage, air conditioning, process refrigeration and heat pumps.
Contents:  Refrigeration cycles and effects: Compression, absorption, adsorption, ejectors, electrothermal, magnetic (with focus on compression systems).
Refrigerants: Thermophysical and thermodynamic properties, safety issues and influence on the environment, "natural" refrigerants.
Components of compression plants: Compressors, heat exchangers, controls, auxiliaries.
Design of compression refrigeration plants: Load calculation, dimensioning of compressors, heat exchangers, piping arrangement.
Control and automation: Hardware, design of control systems, programmable logic controllers.
Periphery: Thermal insulation, sound abatement, anti-vibration measures.
Direct cooling systems for direct expansion, flooded evaporation, forced circulation.
Indirect cooling systems for: singe-phase (brine) and two-phase fluids as secondary refrigerants.
Applications of refrigeration: Air conditioning, commercial refrigeration, industrial refrigeration, thermal energy storage systems, combined cycles (heat, power, cold energy), heat pumps and energy recovery, ORC systems.
Standards and safety: National and international standards, legal codes, safety measures in connection with refrigerants and refrigeration plants.
Project materiel: Drawings and diagrams.
