Aim:  To introduce the background for material behaviour in metals, polymers, ceramics and composites due to elastic and plastic deformation and due to crack propagation. To introduce simple models for the stiffness and strength of materials. To introduce and practice the application of material indices for selection of optimal materials.
Contents:  Elastic deformation and Hooke's law. Measurement and calculation of material constants. Material indices for optimal choice of materials. Stiffness of composite materials. Micro mechanisms and methods for calculation of plastic deformation. Hardness measurement and relation to yield stress. Storage of mechanical energy in flywheels and springs. Fracture mechanics and the brittle fracture criterion. Criteria in the design of pressure vessels. Fatigue crack propagation and the Paris equation.
