Aim:  To give the student a basic understanding of the theory of anisotropic elasticity and energy methods, and based on this teach the student to perform computations of laminate stiffness and strength.
Contents:  Stress and strain definitions. Relations between stresses and strains in anisotropic materials and rotational transformations of constitutive models. Transformations from three-dimensional to two- and one-dimensional models. Principle of minimum potential energi. Stiffness, strength computations for anisotropic laminates. Symmetry conditions. Examples of laminate design. Torsion of rods with non-circular cross-sections. Computer exercises using Maple and / or Matlab.
