Prerequisites:  41612 and Midway project in Engineering Design and Product Development
Preferred prerequisites:  Students from non-mechanical fields are required to have synthesis competencies equivalent to 41612 and midway project
Aim:  To create an understanding of the activities of innovation and technical innovations. To create an understanding for establishing business and to compete, based upon innovation. To know the most important factors that influence the goals of: costs, quality, environment and lead-time. To comprehend some innovation techniques and be able to create innovative technical solutions by their use. To be able to use personal creativity.
Contents:  The course treats the following dimensions of innovation:

Product development in cooperation with innovation
· Society, industry and the individual as innovation stakeholders
· Drivers for innovation
· Technology, research, development and product planning
· The company's technology platform, knowledge- and competence development
· Entrepreneurship, establishing a company's product assortment.

Setting the scene, methods and approach to innovation
· Understanding of a company's core business
· Business and product innovation
· Tools for systematic and ad-hoc innovation
· Systematic searching, design methodology and systematics
· Patents, licenses and inventions
· Organisation of multi-disciplinary innovation
· Creativity, creativity training

Product development methods and approaches
· Integration and concurrency, dispositions
· Goals, management and strategy
· Procedures and milestones
· Organisation, teams, networks

Multi product development
· Modularisation, reuse, variation
· Platform thinking

The practical aspect of this course will be carried out in collaboration with industry, where innovative ideas will be created and taken further into the product development process, in the form of technical concepts.
