Previous course:  92508.92602
Prerequisites:  31025
No credit points with:  92508.92602
Aim:  The aim of the course is to make the student able to:
-understand the theories and methods that are used at high frequencies (including optical frequencies)
-understand the physical mode of operation and the technical construction of the components that are used at high frequencies.
-design, fabricate, and do measurements on microwave circuits, especially circuits that are used in communication systems.
Contents:  1. Application of Maxwell's equations on integral and differential form. The complex symbolic method for sinusoidal time varying fields.
2. Waves and transmission lines: Characteristic impedance, reflection coefficient, VSWR, phase and group velocity, dispersion, attenuation, skin effect, Quarter wave transformers and bandwidth.
3. Amplifiers, noise figure, S-parameters, filters, and directional couplers including examples of their realization in microstrip.
4. Polarization of a plane wave: linear, circular, and elliptic.
5. Reflection, refraction, and diffraction. Snell's law of refraction, Fresnel reflection coefficients, Brewster angle. Brief about physical and geometric diffraction theory. 6. Waveguides: Rectangular and dielectric (optical fiber).
7. Project: Design of microstrip circuits (coupler, filters, amplifiers, etc.) using a PC, layout, and realization of the circuits.
Measurement of S-parameters, bandwidth, etc. at microwave frequencies (GHz).
Remarks:  This course qualify to be a part of the bachelor of science specialisation in Wireless Communication.
