Aim: To give the students a basic knowledge of the most important building materials, their properties and testing methods. |
Contents: The main emphasis is placed on properties of materials used in structures. The following materials are dealt with: concrete, wood and wood-based materials, bricks and tiles, mortar and lightweight concrete.
Seven laboratory exercises are carried out:
A. General materials properties
B. Moisture calculations
C. Testing of concrete aggregates
1. Design of concrete mixes and testing of fresh concrete
2. Testing of hardened concrete
3. Long-term properties of wood
4. Short-term properties of wood
Laboratory exercises A, B and C are reported the same afternoon in continuation of the practical work. Written reports of laboratory exercises 1 through 4 are submitted for evaluation not later than 14 days after the day at which the exercise is carried out. |
