Aim: To give the students a basic knowledge of the structure and properties of concrete in such a way that they obtain a sufficiently strong background to select raw materials for concrete and to design, produce and use concrete correctly and economically in connection with projects anywhere in the world, taking into account local geologic and climatic conditions.
Contents: As far as practically possible the course is based on materials science concepts, so that the students obtain a fundamental understanding of the relationships between structure and properties of concrete. The course is divided into 56 modules, which treat problems of practical use or civil engineers: Choice of cement. Evaluation of cement certificates. Quality of water for production and curing of concrete. Identification of deleterious properties of aggregates. Production of aggregates. Choice of additives. Design of concrete with chemical as well as mineral admixtures. Structure and properties of fresh concrete. Production, transport, casting, surface treatment of curing of concrete. Concreting in hot, dry weather. Winter-concreting. Properties of hardened concrete, such as density, elasticity, creep, shrinkage, cracking, thermal properties, fire resistance, frost resistance, permeability, watertightness and resistance against chamical attack. Repair. Demolition and recycling.
