Aim: To give the students basic knowledge about designing structures in concrete, steel, and wood and preparing them for practical work with consulting engineers and contractors. The course does not deal with special problems treated in the courses Bridge and Space Structures. |
Contents: In the courses Structural Mechanics 1 and 2, Beams and Frames, Steel Structures, Wood Structures, and Concrete Structures, the students have been taught how a particular structure can be analysed and designed. However, the purpose of the present course is to explain the conditions which decide an appropriate structural layout and choice of building materials. This comprises e.g. the types of loading, the foundation conditions, possible fire risk and special user defined conditions, such as limited structural depth. Economic considerations are nearly always an important factor and may justify a search for optimum spans etc. Requirements of limited crack width and deflections may be important. The increasing labour cost as compared with the cost of building materials calls for simplified construction methods (industrialized building, prefabrication). Prevention of progressive collapse. Appropriate layout of reinforcement in concrete structures. Failures, errors, strengthening and repair.
Advantages and disadvantages of statically determinate versus statically indeterminate structures are explained. The most important types of structures are reviewed, including flat slabs, ribbed plates, frame structures, trsses, stayed structures, walls, consoles, towers, silos, water towers etc. Structural details and erection methods are also reviewed. |
