Aim: To introduce RF communication systems including the tradeoffs between transmission media characteristics, modulation types and circuit technology. The student will be able to use data and specifications for circuits and components in system designs.
Contents: Signal propagation in radio channels. Analog and digital modulations. RF circuits including linear amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, detectors, and power amplifiers. The Heterodyne principle. Phase locked loops for modulation, demodulation, carrier recovery and frequency synthesis. circuit concepts like stability, noise, and dynamic range. System concepts including signal to noise ratio, thresholds and bit error rates
