Aim: To introduce the student to methods and concepts used in modern experimental environments. Using a problem related to measuring technology, the students are trained in the analysis of such a problem and planning its solution. On the basis of this, it should be possible to make an appropriate choice of measuring method as well as an assessment of its scope and limitations. In the associated practical experiment, the application of digital electronics is illustrated through the use of microprocessors among others, dealing with topics such as the theory of measurement, reproducibility and the recognition and identification of error sources. Emphasis is laid upon the final report explaining the choice of method and equipment as well as assessing results and their reliability.
Contents: Theory: Introduction to experimental measurement theory and its application to the planning of experiments and the estimation of uncertainty. Laboratory: Obligatory experimental work and laboratory work in connection with the project. Project: A variety of topics are offered, primarily related to existing fields of activity at DTU in experimental physics.
