Aim: An elementary introduction to the basic concepts of modern physics and applications emphasizing areas of special importance for material testing and electronic purposes. The student is to learn how to identify relevant simple models for a given problem and perform minor calculations on the basis of these, finally assessing the usefulness of the result in a technical or physical context. It is particularly the aim of the course, that a good knowledge of conditions in the solid state as a basis for electronic purposes is acquired. |
Contents: Elements of the theory of relativity. Electromagnetic waves and their quantification. Particle waves, uncertainty, tunneling. Quantum mechanics and stationary states: Particle gas, oscillator, central field problem. Quanntization of angular momentum, spin. Atoms and molecules: X-ray radiation, atomic spectrums, gaslaser, molecular spectrums. The solid state: Band theory, semiconductor devices, lasers, superconductivity. Nuclear structure. |
